Ed Vliegen, who was born in 1966 in Heerlen, the Netherlands. The Dutch architect is currently involved in the development of Hòfi Sint Joris, where he contributes to creating a living environment that thoughtfully integrates architecture, landscape, and sustainability. His experience with climate-responsive design and his strong focus on the natural environment align closely with the vision of the project.
Ed developed an interest in buildings and landscapes at an early age while growing up in southern Limburg. After studying construction engineering, he earned his architecture degree from the Academy of Architecture in Maastricht in 1996. Since then, he has built a career spanning more than three decades in the architectural profession.
His connection to Curaçao began long before his professional involvement on the island. Stories shared by his father, who frequently visited Curaçao during the 1960s, sparked a lasting fascination with the island’s culture, architecture, and unique atmosphere.
Ed’s first professional connection to the Caribbean came in 2011 when he participated in a design competition for a multidisciplinary school on Bonaire. Although the project was never realized, it proved to be a defining moment in his career. Concepts such as natural ventilation, shading, water management, and climate-responsive design became key elements in his architectural approach.
In 2022, Ed was given the opportunity to design a private residence on Curaçao. The project allowed him to work closely with local craftsmen and gain firsthand experience with regional building methods and materials. The design emphasized a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor living, incorporating generous roof overhangs, natural ventilation, and the reuse of hardwood shutters and window frames salvaged from a demolished building.
It was during the realization of this residence that his collaboration with Hòfi Sint Joris began. According to Ed, the project stands out because of its comprehensive vision for residential development and quality of life. In addition to housing, significant attention is given to green spaces, infrastructure, sustainability, and community gathering areas. This holistic approach immediately resonated with him.
In his work on Curaçao, the surrounding environment always serves as the starting point. Wind patterns, sunlight, shade, and vegetation are fundamental considerations throughout the design process. Ed believes that architecture should complement the landscape rather than dominate it. His goal is to create buildings that reinforce the natural qualities of a place while responding effectively to the island’s climate.
Sustainability is another important aspect of his work. Ed favors natural and environmentally responsible materials that are well suited to the Caribbean setting and contribute to comfortable indoor environments. His approach focuses on practical solutions that help buildings remain naturally cooler while reducing reliance on mechanical cooling systems.
What particularly appeals to him about designing on Curaçao is the strong connection between architecture and outdoor living. While projects in the Netherlands must respond to changing seasons and significant temperature variations, Curaçao offers the opportunity to create open and relaxed living environments where shade, ventilation, and outdoor spaces become integral parts of everyday life.
Ed draws inspiration from travel, landscapes, architecture, and the ways in which people live and interact with their surroundings. He is currently developing residential concepts that combine natural materials, tropical minimalism, and Caribbean influences. Across all of his work, he seeks to create environments defined by comfort, simplicity, and a strong sense of place.
For Ed, successful architecture is achieved when a building feels completely at home within its surroundings. His ultimate objective is to create places where people feel comfortable, connected to their environment, and able to fully enjoy the lifestyle and natural beauty that make Curaçao unique.
