Traffic Safety on the Route to Santa Catharina

The route to Santa Catharina is used by a wide range of road users. Outside peak hours, traffic can be relatively light at certain times. The road is generally easy to navigate, with few sharp turns, which can cause drivers to gradually increase their speed without realizing it. But even when traffic is light, it is important to remain alert and observe the posted speed limit.

More Traffic Activity Than Meets the Eye

The Santa Catharina Road is more than just a through route. Several businesses and other destinations are located along the road, resulting in regular traffic entering or leaving driveways, turning off the main road, or entering from side roads. Cyclists also use the route.

A clear and relatively empty roadway does not necessarily mean that traffic conditions are predictable. A vehicle emerging from a driveway or side road, a cyclist traveling along the road, or another road user who is less visible can change the situation within seconds. Maintaining a lower, consistent speed gives drivers more time to identify potential hazards and respond safely.

Extra caution is required during the evening hours. Cyclists are harder to see in the dark and may not always have proper lighting. Drivers should therefore remain aware of vulnerable road users and adjust their speed to the conditions.

Observe the Speed Limit

Under Curaçao’s Traffic Ordinance, the general maximum speed for motor vehicles outside built-up areas is 60 kilometers per hour (approximately 37 mph), unless a different speed is indicated by traffic signs. The ordinance also requires drivers to choose a speed that allows them to bring their vehicle to a complete stop within the distance they can see and that is clear of obstacles.

On the route to Santa Catharina, this means that the appropriate speed is determined by more than the amount of traffic at any given moment. Driveways, side roads, cyclists, and other road users must also be taken into account. A road that appears clear and easy to navigate can still present unexpected traffic situations.

Everyone Has a Role in Road Safety

Road safety starts with the behavior of every road user. For drivers, this means observing the speed limit, maintaining a safe following distance, and remaining alert to traffic entering the road from side streets and driveways. For cyclists and other vulnerable road users, being clearly visible—especially after dark—is equally important.
