Experiential learning during Discovery Week
Hoben Balente College organizes a Discovery Week each trimester, during which students engage in activities designed to apply classroom learning in practical contexts. Experiential learning outside the classroom is a central focus during this period. The visit to Hòfi Sint Joris formed part of this program and involved 28 participants.
Site selection with a personal context
The choice for Hòfi Sint Joris was based on the personal involvement of teacher Leannord Francisca, who owns a plot of land at the location. Within the educational objectives of Discovery Week, he identified the site as suitable for an outdoor learning experience and requested permission to use the area for this purpose with his students.
The location offered adequate space and facilities to support a program centered on movement, collaboration, and engagement.
Cycling excursion and sports activities
The program began with a cycling excursion to Sint Joris Bay, allowing participants to explore the surrounding environment in an active way. This was followed by the use of on-site sports facilities, including football and padel courts. These activities provided opportunities for physical activity and teamwork.
Student experience
Students responded positively to the visit. The combination of outdoor activity, movement, and group interaction contributed to an engaged and relaxed atmosphere. Several students expressed appreciation for the environment, particularly the views and the open space.
The fact that the activities took place on a site with a personal connection to the teacher was also noted by students and added an additional dimension to the experience.
Group dynamics
Working together outside the school environment contributed to strengthened group dynamics. Students interacted in new ways, which supported a more cohesive and positive group atmosphere.
Teacher reflection
Leannord Francisca, a teacher of Dutch, Theology, and Compass at Hoben Balente College, teaches across multiple year levels and programs, including BV1, BV2, HAVO/VWO 3, and AT1–4 (AGO). He indicated that the students’ attitude and engagement were key factors in the success of the day. The overall enthusiasm of the group contributed to the value of the activity within the Discovery Week framework.
Conclusion
The visit was concluded as a successful educational activity aligned with the objectives of experiential learning within the school program.
