HYROX

HYROX

HYROX originated in Germany in 2017 and has since developed into a rapidly growing global fitness competition. The sport is especially popular among runners and CrossFit athletes looking to expand or vary their training. Events are typically held in large indoor venues, where participants complete a standardized course consisting of running combined with fixed fitness stations. Competitors can take part in several categories, including Solo (Open or Pro), Doubles, or Relay (Team).

The sport is characterized as a hybrid discipline, combining running with functional strength exercises. Due to the alternation between endurance running and high-intensity movements, HYROX demands sustained stamina as well as mental focus throughout the entire race. Within this international competition format, training adaptations based on the same structure and physical demands are increasingly emerging in Curaçao as well.

Training at Hòfi Sint Joris

During the Easter weekend, a HYROX-inspired training session was organized at Hòfi Sint Joris. This was not an official event but a community-based workout session for friends, family, and local residents. The session was designed as an individual challenge, with each participant completing the full course and recording their own time.

A total of 23 participants took part. The activity was intended for individuals with a solid fitness base, but due to the segmented structure of the course, all participants were able to complete it despite its physical intensity.

Course and Components

The course consisted of a combination of running and functional exercises based on the HYROX format. Participants completed eight segments of 500-meter running intervals, alternated with different fitness stations.

The stations included a 500-meter SkiErg, a 25-meter sled push, a 25-meter sled pull, 40 meters of burpee broad jumps, 500 meters of rowing, a 100-meter farmer’s carry, 50 meters of sandbag lunges, and 50 wall ball squats. Each participant completed the full course individually, with final times used for comparison.

Although physically demanding, the structured format allowed participants to progress step by step through the workout.

Execution and Results

The session had an informal yet competitive character. Participant times were recorded, though no official race classification was applied.

The fastest times were recorded by Stijn Coppens, followed by Ramon Vissers and Sebastian van Werkhoven. Beyond rankings, the main focus was on completing the full course and experiencing this style of training.

Location and Conditions

Hòfi Sint Joris proved to be a highly suitable environment for this training session. The football field and surrounding area allowed for a clear and organized course setup. The conditions supported a safe execution of all components while providing sufficient space for participants to maintain their own pace.

HYROX in the Tropics

This weekend demonstrated that this type of hybrid training translates effectively to a local setting. Tropical heat significantly impacts performance output. The combination of running and functional exercises in this climate requires careful energy management, with additional attention to hydration and recovery between stations.

Hòfi Sint Joris once again served as the setting for an intensive sporting activity centered on effort and resilience. The session reflects an approach in which movement and community engagement come together, with sport as a consistent part of an active and connected lifestyle.
